Achieving over 90% energy self-sufficiency, sustainably
In this now world-famous study, four of The Netherlands’ most advanced eco-neighbourhoods were assessed on the performance of their energy system. By creating improved scenario’s, it was found that over 90% self-sufficiency was viable.
The goal for this report (written by SmartHoods founder Florijn de Graaf) was to assess the self-sufficiency potential for highly integrated local energy systems.
By smartly combining a large set of energy technologies, the dependance on external energy supply could greatly be reduced. Up to 90%, using renewables and biomass.
The findings of this research laid the groundwork for the integrated Food-Water-Energy system design central to the SmartHoods concept.
The international success achieved by this study has motivated Florijn to carry on his mission to realise the self-sufficient neighbourhood of the future.
